Its been a very pleasant hiking day. Except for about the first 5 miles of walking through lava fields the trails have been easy. And the scenery has been very pretty.

We got up at about 7:30 and met our ride at 8:20 to first go to the post office and then back to the trail. Our ride was one of the workers at the hotel who I hired last night. He was very nice to us.

We started hiking at 9:30. The first job was to climb many hills though a gigantic lava field. After that we stopped for lunch. Wes and I had egg salad sandwiches, which were delicious.

The rest of the day was a lot of flat trails through forest. The only problem was that we ran out of water. We reacbhed the next highway, where the guide book tells of a spring that is half a mile down the highway and is in a ditch 50 yards from the highway.

A spring sounded good, so off we went. We probably wasted an hour looking for it, bushwacking the entire time. Finally, after giving up, we had a choice to make, hitch back into town (we were next to a highway), or continue. We continued. In about two miles we found a lake that had acceptable water. But it was not a very inviting camp spot. Because we were pretty exhausted at this point, we stayed.
