The Stabler store.

PCT 2010, Day 3 -- 8/3/10

Summary   Prev   Next

Today was a resupply day. In the past that meant going in town where there is good food (hamburgers at least) maybe a shower and a laundry mat. Maybe even a hotel.

We, of course, got Tammy (Ken's wife) all excited about the town life. Her expectations were high. Last night we read yogi about Stabler and realized I had got my facts wrong and that it wasn't going to be much, but we still expected a hamburger at least.

We were up by 6:45 and hiking before 8:00. We made it to the store in Stabler at noon after walking a mile along the highway. No hamburgers! The store manager was nice and we did get some ice cream as well as our supply box. No bathroom, no shower, no laundry. We had some microwaved burritos. Even though the store manager was super nice and delivered everything mentioned in yogi, we went away disappointed.

It was 2:00 by the time we got back to the trail. Nice hiking, mostly flat. We met a volunteer group that was working on the trail. Nice people doing hard work on behalf of hikers like us. Later we met another section hiker named "Has no horse".

At about 3:00 we made it to a large creek named Panther Creek. From there it was a very steep climb for 3 miles to the first camp able spot.

We made it and now we really are ahead of our original plan (prediction). Even with a detour and a long stay in Stabler we still put in almost 14 trail miles.

At this point most of us have something wrong, mainly blisters. But still doing great and having fun.
