Blisters!

PCT 2010, Day 4 -- 8/4/10

Summary   Prev   Next

I am having a great time. No knee or feet problems. No blisters. No heat rashes. Only a few bug bites and cramps. And no stomach problems -- all things that have plagued my previous hikes.

The weather has been great; mostly sunny and very few clouds. Not at all what I expected. I thought it would be rainy and dreary. The trail continues to be much like southern Oregon, lots of forest walking with an occasionally view. But, unlike Oregon, the trail is exceptionally well kept. It makes for fast easy hiking.

Even so, we haven't been making the best time. We have been taking long breaks as everyone in the group is tuning up. We only covered about 15 trail miles today. One problem is Tammy's blister. But that doesn't account for all the delays.

I noticed that it feels like late summer here. It might be because the Sun doesn't behave like I am used to in Southern CA. This feeling seems to coincide with what I think about the hike. Its like the end of a long hike that started in spring. You see I feel like I have been thru hiking since spring even though each segment of the hike was in different years. All the segments are joined in my mind as one continuous trip. (I probably should be ashamed of myself since I am not a true thru hiker.)

It all adds up to a sad feeling because the adventure of the last decade is coming to a close. I started this last decade long distance hiking with all my unmarried sons. One by one they went off and got married and started jobs so they can't hike. Now I am hiking with my oldest and his new wife. Even he says this will probably be his last long hike for a long time to come. When I contemplate all this it probably means that this one will be my last too, at least my last of the family sort. It's like I am realizing that I am growing old and things will never be the same.

Still all this doesn't mean that I can't have a great time on this final trip. So far I am!
