Last Few Miles of the Trail

PCT 2012, Day 40 -- 6/9/12

Summary   Prev   Next

Joy. Joy. Joy. Oh the thrill of hiking and completing the PCT. I had a wonderful day. All systems go. The trail was beautiful and well graded. Beautiful scenery--much like the deep Sierras. Lots of pine trees, mixed with smooth trails, with a splattering of granite rocks.

I have been so excited about finishing tomorrow. But today went so well, now I am thinking that I don't want it to end.

I am only 7 flat miles from Kennedy Meadows. Now I can't imagine not making it--I could almost crawl the rest of the way. It's hard to believe that this seven year adventure is finally going to be over in about two more hours of hiking in the morning.

I'll admit that this year has been a hard one for me, in ways I didn't expect. My feet were a disaster and the various rashes were difficult to deal with. Even so I am glad I stuck it out. More than once I thought about aborting and continuing next year.

I am laying in my sleeping bag, in the wide open, watching the beautiful mountains go dark and the stars come out. It's hard to believe this is my last night on the PCT. But it's turning out to be a good one.
